England start their Euro 2020 contest against Croatia today, in a rematch of the last meaningful game Gareth Southgate’s side played at a major finals – a defeat in the World Cup semi-final three years ago.

With the additions of Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish, the Three Lions are expected to be a more creative, expansive attacking outfit this time around. Southgate must pick and choose which of his most in-form players to get the victory that England needs to get off to a good start in the Championships.

With Scotland and the Czech Republic still to come, neither of these teams will have an easy path to the knock-out rounds if they make a mistake in the first game and leave themselves with work to do.

Croatia enters Euro 2020 having won just two of their last nine games as Zlatko Dalic struggles to find the right balance in the team, but with the likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Mateo Kovacic, and Luka Modric at the heart of the team, they will provide stiff opposition.

When is it going to happen?

The game will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13th.

What is the best way for me to watch it?

In the United Kingdom, the game will be broadcast live on BBC One.

A win for either team will make them favourites to win the group, though whether that is actually desirable will be revealed in a couple of weeks, as it could pit Group D’s best against the likes of Portugal, France, or Germany.

Southgate’s headline selection was Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier, who lined up at left-back. Captain Harry Kane leads the line, with Raheem Sterling starting ahead of Grealish, Rashford, and Sancho.

Prediction

In recent years, the three meetings between these England and Croatia teams have resulted in one win, one draw, and a 3-3 tie on aggregate. That is how similar they are. Croatia’s golden generation is gradually fading, but they will know what to expect, and it will be up to England to be more composed in possession than they were in the semi-final in Moscow. England will have to be patient, but Gareth Southgate’s emerging pool of attacking talent should see them through. England Croatia wins 2-1.
